Family Health Centers of Southwest Florida is committed to ensuring that our website, fhcswfl.org, is accessible to all users, including people with visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive disabilities.

Our Conformance Goal

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities.

Measures Taken

Family Health Centers of Southwest Florida engaged Brian Joseph Studios to conduct a comprehensive accessibility audit and remediation of this website. The project was completed in April 2026 and included the following:

  • Automated scanning using Google Lighthouse, WAVE, and axe DevTools
  • Manual testing using ANDI for heading structure and landmark regions
  • Manual keyboard-only navigation testing across all page templates
  • Screen reader spot-checking using NVDA and VoiceOver
  • Remediation of all identified failures including color contrast, missing alt text, heading structure, form label associations, keyboard focus, and ARIA attributes

Following remediation, this website achieved a Google Lighthouse Accessibility score of 100 out of 100 on both Desktop and Mobile.

Known Limitations

Despite our best efforts, one area of partial limitation exists:

  • Provider Search — Select Locations dropdown: This field uses Chosen.js, a third-party jQuery plugin that replaces the native browser dropdown with a custom widget. While we have added accessible name, role, and state attributes to this field, the Chosen.js plugin does not fully implement the ARIA combobox pattern. The field is functional and announced by screen readers. We are evaluating a full replacement of this component in a future update.
